  • Peer Review Process

The peer-review process is designed to ensure that Statistics in Volcanology (SIV) publishes outstanding scholarship. The manuscript's managing Editor will collect reviews and recommendations from at least two reviewers including one Associate Editor. The review process will conclude with one of four possible outcomes: 1) accept without revision, 2) accept after revision without further external review, 3) neither accept nor reject until author(s) make revisions and resubmit, 4) reject. The reviews will be single blind but not double blind (i.e., reviewers will know the identity of the author(s), but not vice versa, unless the reviewer self-identifies in the review). The manuscript's managing Editor will finalize the decision and advise the corresponding author through the bepress system. The ultimate responsibility for all decisions lies with the managing and associate Editors, to whom any appeals should be addressed.

Policies Governing the Peer Review Process

Submitted manuscripts cannot have been previously published or be currently submitted elsewhere for publication while in review for SIV, although manuscripts may have been deposited on a preprint server. Manuscripts that are derived from papers presented at conferences can be submitted unless they have been published as part of the conference proceedings in a peer-reviewed journal. Authors are required to ensure that no material submitted as part of a manuscript infringes existing copyrights, or the rights of a third party.

Manuscripts must be submitted by one of its authors and should not be submitted by someone on their behalf. The submitting author takes responsibility for the article during submission and peer review. Submission of a manuscript to SIV implies that all authors have read and agreed to its content.

    Submission Guidelines

Please read the following guidelines carefully. Manuscripts that do not strictly adhere to our submission guidelines will not be sent out for peer review.

    1. Files should be submitted electronically to: http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/siv
    2. Manuscripts must be submitted in English (American or British). A manuscript may be submitted for review in any file format; PDF format is preferred. If the manuscript file cannot be opened or viewed by the managing editor, it will not be accepted.
    3. All data used for any analysis should be clearly and precisely documented. If accepted for publication, this data should be made available, electronically, via the supplemental files link.
    4. Upon receipt of a successful submission, a confirmation email will be sent electronically to the corresponding author(s). The submission is not complete if a confirmation email has not been received.
    5. The submission is not finalized until the Submit button has been pressed and the corresponding author has received a confirmation email. The review process begins as soon as SIV receives a readable manuscript, along with a separate abstract submission and manuscript title. You may revise any of these elements later by clicking on the submitted manuscript title on your My Account page.

After publication, authors have the right to post pre-print or post-print versions of their article online, including on their personal, departmental, or institutional repository pages.

    General Guidelines for Manuscripts

    1. The abstract should be 250 words or less.
    2. Please use the following document structure for the manuscript:
      Introduction
      - The introduction should orient the reader to the intellectual context of the paper and should include up-to-date literature citations
      Section
      Subsection
      Sub-subsection
      Acknowledgments
      - The acknowledgments should be brief and acknowledge significant contributions by professional associates, students, permission to publish by employer, financial support, and reviewers.
      References
      - A reference list is required. Be sure to cite papers with names and titles as they appear in the published article. Include DOI URLs whenever possible.
      Appendices (if any)
      - Submit long appendices as additional files.
    3. Figures and tables should be presented and labeled consecutively.
    4. Use italics to emphasize text rather than underlining it (e.g., unusual, unique or foreign terms, titles of books, journals and movies).
    5. Avoid using footnotes in the text, except with tables.
    6. The submitted manuscript should be formatted as double-spaced and include line numbers.
    7. Accepted manuscripts must have references formatted as a bibtex file.
    8. Accepted manuscripts will have the text formatted as a latex file.

    Literature Citations

    1. Cite references in the text by author(s) name and year (e.g., Jones 1999). List the cited references alphabetically by lead author's name in chronological order at the end of the manuscript. Web material, such as Web sites, on-line books, journal articles and other formal publications should be cited and referenced like their in-print counterparts. Include DOIs when possible.
    2. Check that every reference cited (in main body, tables, and figure captions) is listed in the reference section.
    3. Any in press articles cited within the references and necessary for the reviewers' assessment of the manuscript must be made available, if requested by the editorial office.

    Figures and Tables

    1. Anticipate that in the published document all tables and figures will need to fit within a letter sized page with margins on all sides (top, bottom, left and right), either portrait or landscape.
    2. Every figure, table, equation must be referenced in the text. Always spell out the entity being referenced (e.g., Figure 1, Tables 2 and 3, Equations 3-5).
    3. Each table and figure must have a unique number (consecutive Arabic numerals), title, and/or caption and be cited consecutively in the text of the manuscript.
    4. For tables, use horizontal rules sparingly and avoid vertical rules entirely.
    5. Here are some tips for preparing your figures.
      • Use solid, sans serif type for lettering. At 100 percent, no type should be smaller than 7 point.
      • Avoid legends; use the figure caption to describe symbols.
      • All maps should include scale bar, north arrow, and coordinate type (Lat./Long or UTM).
      • Plots should have both axes labeled and units specified.
      • Figure resolution should be at least 300 DPI (dots per inch). Printing or converting a figure to a PDF format works well for graphs, maps, and edited photos.

    Mathematics

    1. Equations should be numbered (consecutive Arabic numerals) sequentially and on the right.
    2. Note: All manuscripts accepted for publication must provide math formulas and equations in AMS-LaTeX format.

After Your Manuscript Has Been Reviewed

Once a manuscript has been reviewed, an email will be sent to the corresponding author(s) with the reviewers' and managing editor's comments. A period of time will be recommended for making revisions. Once the advised revisions are completed:
    1. Upload a revised manuscript that includes all the required revisions.
    2. Upload a cover letter that itemizes all revisions made and addresses all comments and concerns made by the reviewers and managing editor.
The managing editor will email the corresponding author with any additional comments/revisions and advise when the paper is in an acceptable format for publication.

After Your Manuscript Has Been Accepted

    1. SIV requires that any manuscript accepted for publication be formatted and uploaded as a LaTeX file and its corresponding reference list be formatted and uploaded as a BibTeX file.
    2. LaTeX is a document markup language and document preparation system for the TeX typesetting program (similar in principle to HTML). LaTeX files are simple text files. Please check out LaTeX for the impatient if you need help getting started or obtaining LaTeX for your system (Windows, Mac OS X or Linux).
    3. SIV will provide a template LaTeX file to assist with creating the latex file for your manuscript. Using this LaTeX template, the text of the manuscript is inserted in the appropriate places in the template. The template contains user comments (documentation between two rows of '%%%%' symbols) to guide you through the process. The template contains all of the formatting rules for creating a published manuscript.
    4. All math formulas and equations must be formatted in LaTeX. For some examples visit this link. The American Math Society (AMS) is the official source for information and examples regarding mathematical equations formatted in LaTeX. AMS-LaTeX extensions are part of the standard LaTeX distribution and are designed to facilitate writing math formulas and to improve the typographical quality of their output.
    5. BibTeX is a simple text file format that stores all reference information in an external flat-file database. The BibTeX file format allows citation information to be collected minus any type of formatting. SIV manages a consistent formatting style for the reference list when the manuscript is published using a BibTeX style file.
    6. SIV will provide a BibTeX template file as an aid for compiling references into the BibTeX format. The template contains six example entries for the most common types of references (journal articles, books, book chapters, conference proceedings, reports, theses). This database file is easily linked to the latex document and any reference contained within the database can be easily cited in the manuscript using the following citation style:
      • \citet{key} for textual style
      • \citep{key} for parenthesized style
      • (Please note, the key must be the unique citation key id listed in YOUR references.bib database file.)
    7. A nice explanation regarding how to manage bibliographies using BibTeX is this article by Andrew Roberts, "Getting to Grips with LaTeX, Bibliographies with BibTeX" .
    8. Of course, in order to generated a formatted PDF file, a working LaTeX system must be installed on your computer (as mentioned above) . SIV does not require a formatted PDF, only these components:
      • manuscript in LaTeX format (file.tex)
      • references in BibTeX format (references.bib)
      • 300 DPI figure files (Create a separate file for each figure; see suggestions above).
