Abstract

Attempts to re-establish connections between Bayesian aspects of meta-analysis and validity generalization. The 1st half of this chapter emphasizes statistics and calculations. This chapter begins by describing empirical Bayes meta-analysis and linking it to validity generalization. The authors then extend previous work by showing how empirical Bayes meta-analysis might be based on r rather than the Fisher transformed z. The 2nd half of this chapter is more methodological and deals less with analysis of the data but more with the design of the study and the influence of design on inference. In general, the authors tackle the problem of the legitimacy of inference in meta-analysis. In particular, they consider the commensurability problem, the homogeneity of study characteristics, and legal issues.
