Abstract

A tidepool population of Amphistegina madagascariensis d’Orbigny from Makapuu Point, Oahu, Hawaii, was sampled biweekly from October 1970 through October 1971. Size frequency distribution and standing crop analysis indicated a 6‐month reproductive period beginning in mid‐February and continuing through mid‐August. In culture Amphistegina grew about 7 µ per day. Fecundity varied directly with parent size, with a mean of 1.1 × 103 young produced per adult. The estimated minimum size for reproduction was 700 µ. From standing crop and mortality data, sediment production by A. madagascariensis was estimated as 5 × 102 g CaCO3 m−2 yr−1.
