Abstract
Two frequently noted shortcomings in studies of resilience, the arbitrariness in the selection of outcome variables, and the challenge of accounting for the social and cultural context in which resilience occurs, are being addressed by a unique international collaboration among qualitative and quantitative researchers and service providers from 11 communities around the globe. This article discusses progress made in the design of a mixed methods approach to the study of resilience with high-risk child populations facing war, violence, cultural disintegration, structural inequalities and mental health challenges on 5 continents. Members of the research team meeting in Halifax, Canada, in March 2003 developed an innovative approach to cross-cultural research on children's mental health in efforts to better understand the phenomenon of resilience.
