Abstract

This paper describes research procedures designed to answer the question: What speech performance categories are actually used by speech raters as they arrive at judgments about speeches? The results indicate that forty‐four speech raters produced fifteen different speech rating policies or a different speech evaluation strategy for about every three raters. In addition, eighteen raters used basically one speech performance category in determining their overall speech evaluations.
