[COOPER 126] Strengthening Formative Assessment Using VoiceThread

Presentation Title (in Japanese)

VoiceThreadを利用した効果的な形成的評価

Abstract (250 words or less in English or 500 characters or less in Japanese)

This presentation will explore practical and pedagogically sound ways to create learning activities as formative assessment that are closely connected to learning outcomes. Although there is a growing consensus that we need to create assessment and learning activities that reflect course objectives, we often see a gap between them. Even when a curriculum emphasizes the development of communication skills in Japanese, homework materials, workbook exercises, and quizzes tend to focus on mechanical aspects such as verb conjugation, sentence completion and translation. In this presentation, we will demonstrate how technology, specifically VoiceThread, can help us develop formative assessment that provide opportunities for students to practice target language meaningfully and creatively. During the presentation, we will share sample VoiceThread assignments for college-level first and second year Japanese courses. These assignments closely align with the content and objectives of instructional units. We will also demonstrate how the feedback was given to each student so that VoiceThread assignments worked as effective formative assessment to help students improve their learning.
