Abstract
The foregoing article by Rosenheck and Cicchetti describing the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) report card is a valuable contribution to the emerging literature on the large-scale monitoring of mental health services. In an era of increasing preoccupation with quantification of activity and results, the authors have devised a method for using existing administrative data to highlight and compare key aspects of organizational performance across a large service system. These brief comments fall into three categories: strengths of the model; limitations of and alternatives to exclusive use of existing data; and generalizability of the approach.
