Abstract

The article is about the first work of scientific anticipation in Ecuador, the serial novel, La Receta, relación fantástica [The Recipe, fantastic tale] (1893) by Francisco Campos Coello. From an extraordinary journey through time, made possible by a magic recipe, a man of the nineteenth go to the final decade of the twentieth to verify the changes given in their city. The author, following the aesthetics of Jules Verne, uses the novel to imagine a fantasy related to the world of utopias and make a prospective assessment of the progress allegedly made in Ecuador, through a public and educational policy that has benefited the nation. The article discusses how the science fiction of the nineteenth century in Ecuador, to be illustrative of positivist thought, and being permeated by the imaginary of the progress of science and technology of the moment, it is proposed as the horizon of expectations, in relation to political and economic progress. We stumbled on a foundational utopia that portends the arrival of liberalism in Ecuador; that, beyond being a story of scientific adventure, postulates a political, economic and cultural program as a positive discourse of certain intellectual sectors of Guayaquil. The article, on the other hand, presents the discovery of this forgotten novel in literary historiography of Ecuador.
